Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. Twenty-six of our 32 portfolio stocks have delivered their results this earnings season (we didn't own Abbott Labs at the time of its report). It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. In the week ahead, two more Club names are set to report earnings before a market-moving economic update arrives Thursday morning. The two other reports of note are the January new home sales report on Monday and ISM Manufacturing report on Friday.

While we don't own companies as mergers-and-acquisition plays, the potential for more tie-ups could have significant implications for our remaining oil name: Coterra Energy (CTRA). Chevron's market cap is around $324 billion, while ConocoPhillips is worth roughly $152 billion, based on Thursday's stock prices. Companies in this basket could include Coterra, Devon Energy (DVN) and Diamondback Energy (FANG). Coterra is valued at roughly $22.4 billion Thursday, while Devon and Diamondback are valued at $31.7 billion and $30.5 billion, respectively. The shift has generally been positive for the stock prices of oil companies.

Dealmaking in the U.S. oil and gas patch has picked up pace as producers sought to replenish their inventory after years of under-investment. The most-prized targets for Chevron could be Coterra Energy (CTRA.N) or Devon Energy (DVN.N), he added. Others mentioned included Matador Resources (MTDR.N), Permian Resources (PR.N) and Diamondback Energy (FANG.O). Still, the Exxon deal, the industry's largest since 2016, also set off worries about stiff regulatory scrutiny over anti-competitive concerns. Exxon does not anticipate antitrust hurdles to complete the deal, expected by early 2024.

He said in the short-term resources could be diverted if the conflict expands, such as staff at tech companies being called up as military reservists. "They will probably increase the investment in AI," Krosby said. "It could bolster support for more financial resources for tech for the military, which then ultimately transitions to the private sector tech companies," Krosby added. Oil and natural gas prices traveled divergent paths this week, resulting in a mixed picture for the Club stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). In Thursday's session alone, natural gas prices jumped nearly 7%, as traders reacted to U.S. government data that showed a smaller-than-expected storage build. For the week, through Thursday's settle, natural gas has climbed 8.1%, building on last week's 11% advance. Natural gas on Friday morning jumped another 1.5%. Coterra's revenues are roughly a 50-50 split between oil and natural gas.

The sun is seen behind a crude oil pump jack in the Permian Basin in Loving County, Texas, U.S., November 22, 2019. REUTERS/Angus Mordant/File PhotoAug 1 (Reuters) - Shale producers Pioneer Natural Resources Co (PXD.N) and Devon Energy Corp (DVN.N) on Tuesday tightened budgets and warned of lower drilling and completions activity in coming months after a drop in oil and gas prices slashed their second-quarter profits. U.S. shale producers have been forced to reduce the number of rigs in operation and delay well completions as profits have fallen from bumper 2022 levels after crude prices eased from multi-year highs. Pioneer, a top producer in the Permian shale basin, cut its 2023 budget, including for drilling and completions, by $125 million to a range of $4.375 billion to $4.575 billion. Devon, which operates in Permian's Delaware basin, forecast capital spending of about $900 million in the third quarter, less than in the second quarter, after one temporary fracking crew was dropped from the basin.

A common phrase you'll hear from folks at Smead Capital Management is "fear stock market failure." He manages the Smead Value Fund (SMVLX), which has beaten 99% of similar funds over the last five-year period, and 97% over the last 10- and 15-year periods, according to Morningstar data. Value stocks to buyWithin value stocks, Smead is most bullish on the energy sector, as he believes we're in the earlier stages of a "commodities super cycle." Another area of the market Smead is bullish on right now is shopping mall real-estate investment trusts, or REITs. "Collecting a 6% dividend from them and having upside potential in a stock market that might struggle looks like a winning hand."

The setup for shares of Devon Energy looks rosier despite its recent streak of underperformance, according to Goldman Sachs. Analyst Neil Mehta upgraded the energy stock to buy from neutral, citing its attractive valuation and improving confidence in the capital expenditures and production outlook. Devon Energy stock's shed 19.7% this year. According to Mehta, the company's recent underperformance beginning with 2022 third-quarter results stemmed from higher capital expenditures stemming from a combination of increased material and service costs and lower production. Through dividends and shares repurchases, he expects Devon to return 10% of its market cap versus 8% among his large cap peers.

May 8 (Reuters) - Shale oil producer Devon Energy (DVN.N) on Monday topped Wall Street estimates for first-quarter profit on high demand for crude oil, and raised its share repurchase program by 50% to $3 billion. Energy companies have started boosting investor returns since last year with the excess cash they generated aided by higher crude prices. While crude price fell during the first quarter, nearly 20% lower compared to last year when prices soared to multi-year peaks following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, they were still high enough for producers to remain profitable. Shale producers Marathon Oil Corp (MRO.N), APA Corp (APA.O) and EOG Resources also posted profit above estimates last week, helped by strong crude prices and demand. With only a small fraction of the S & P 500 left to report quarterly earnings, investors are now turning their focus to another major hurdle for the markets and economy: the debt ceiling crisis. Earlier this week, we looked back to debt limit crisis of 2011 for potential lessons. The protracted fight ultimately ended in an agreement in early August of that year, but it was a choppy summertime ride for investors. Within the portfolio, Wynn Resorts will report Tuesday, after the closing bell, and Disney will report on Wednesday, after the closing bell. Estee Lauder (EL) and Emerson Electric (EMR) reported earnings before the opening bell.
Top producers have built a war chest to fund acquisitions after reaping windfall profit in 2022 from skyrocketing oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. At least three analysts have identified Diamondback Energy Inc (FANG.O), Matador Resources Inc (MTDR.N) and Permian Resources Corp (PR.N) as possible takeout targets. The shale patch, which lies between Texas and New Mexico, has the necessary infrastructure and is known for high productivity and large undeveloped reserves. But a surge in oil prices last year helped turn the tide. Last week, ConocoPhillips (COP.N) CEO Ryan Lance said he was expecting more shale deals, adding that "consolidation needs to happen" among Permian Basin energy producers.
